Literacy Program

In 1992, Hawaii Pizza Hut launched an exciting campaign called "Carryout for Literacy." To date this program has raised 3.5 million dollars and it is still going strong.

Hawaii Pizza Hut restaurants sell Literacy cards for $10 each. The card entitles the customer to a "buy one, get one FREE" pizza discount on carryout, delivery and dine-in orders for one year. (Delivery charges and delivery minimum requirements will apply. Blackout dates may apply for delivery and dine-in orders.)

Hawaii Pizza Hut, Inc donates funds to many literacy-oriented programs throughout the State of Hawaii. Some of the organizations donated to include:

  • Hawaii International Dyslexia Association with their Odyssey project
  • Parents and Children Together for their Read To Me Club
  • Friends of the Future with their Hawaii comic book project
  • Hawaii Technology Institute's Literacy Training and their Career Transition Program
  • Hawaii Public Television for their Family Literacy Training
  • Helping Hands Hawaii for their program in tutoring pre-kindergarten to third grade kids who are in low-income families
  • Hui Malama Center on books for their adult literacy program
  • Lynne Waihee's Read to Me International, which promotes reading aloud to children.

The Literacy Fundraising Card is also available for not-for-profit groups interested in fundraising and supporting Literacy Programs in Hawaii. Special Events-Fairs & Business Functions

We'll have it delivered to your event where you have the option of reselling them at your booth or if you would like to just give it out. Some of these events include school fairs, athletic events, charity walks or races, festivals, pizza parties, and even business functions or meetings.

Donation Requests

Hawaii Pizza Hut, Inc. welcome requests for a contribution or a donation.

Please follow the guidelines listed below and include the following information in your letter:

  1. Name of organization
  2. Name of event
  3. Date of event
  4. Contact person and title
  5. Mailing address
  6. Daytime phone number of contact person
  7. Explain what we can do for you
  8. Please explain if Pizza Hut Hawaii will receive any represenation in consideration for donation. For example: use of Pizza Hut Hawaii logo, or name in a program, acknowledgement in letter or brochure, signage, or media exposure.
  9. Mail the letter to:

Bookit

Pizza Hut is a sponsor of the BOOK IT! reading program. The BOOK IT! program is a reading incentive program for children in grades K through six. Here's how the program works:

BOOK IT! motivates children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza. The program is simple for the teacher to use, flexible because goals match reading ability, and fun because achieving a goal is a great reason to celebrate! BOOK IT! was created in 1985 and currently reaches over 14 million students in 38,000 elementary schools annually.

Simple
BOOK IT! runs every school year from October through March. The teacher sets a reading goal for each child in the class. A tracking chart and reproducibles are included to make it that much easier. And, BOOK IT! now offers a free online Minute Tracker! As soon as a child meets the monthly reading goal, the teacher gives him or her a Reading Award Certificate.

Flexible
BOOK IT! goals are based on reading ability. Number of books, number of pages, or number of minutes - they all work. BOOK IT! can also be used with the reading curriculum or as support for comprehension or intervention programs. For children not reading independently, the goal can be set where a parent or others read to the child.

Fun
Pizza Hut is proud of all BOOK IT! readers! The restaurant manager and team congratulate all the BOOK IT! children for meeting their monthly reading goal and reward them with a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza and the new Passport to Reading and sticker on their first visit. On each subsequent visit, the BOOK IT! child will receive another sticker for their Passport to Reading, another Personal Pan Pizza, and more kudos!
